STONE
BARN
UPDATE
( As of August 21, 2008 )
PRESENT: The Stone Barn
Committee is in the process of cutting and clearing selected
trees on the east side of the property to make room for the new
parking lot. The site will then be carefully evaluated for
historic building foundations (that were once part of the large
farm) before construction of the parking lot begins,
particularly where the old house once stood. Some of the
committee members are hoping to raise $2700 to excavate where
the house once stood before it burned down. They feel that
once the parking lot is put in, we will lose the only
opportunity we had to look into the past of a family who were
reported in 1886 to have one of the nicest homes on the road.
If you would like to make a donation for this project, please
contact Kris at (920) 822-5447.
FALL 2008: Once the parking lot
has been cleared and evaluated, construction of the parking lot
can begin. The committee is hoping to get volunteers to
help with the labor, machines, and material to build this lot.
If you can help in any way, please contact Kris at (920)
822-5447. The committee also plans to repair and paint the
metal roof on the barn, and secure the doors and windows.
The inside of the stone barn will remain closed to the public
until after it is renovated, unless there is a special public
event scheduled. The committee also plans to make a
temporary clearing for some picnic tables and recreation so that
people can start going to the new Chase Stone Barn Park and
enjoying it. Development of the park property will be an
ongoing process.
FUTURE PLANS FOR THE STONE BARN:
Once the Stone Barn is completely restored, the large threshing
area of the barn can be used for public events like receptions,
reunions, tractor shows, antique shows, barn dances, town
picnics, etc. We will also display old farm equipment up
along the edge of the loft. The stable area of the barn
will be a rustic agriculture museum where we will park old
tractors and other old farm equipment to be viewed.
FUTURE PLANS FOR THE PARK PROPERTY:
Our committee agrees that we should try to keep the property
as "country" as possible and only do things to the property that
will compliment the barn. Plans to date include installing
stone walking paths around the barn and down to the bordering
creek and other areas of the property. We also plan to
have several picnic areas with flagstone patios and half stone
walls. Other areas of the property will have stone
landscaping and wild flowers, etc.
FUTURE FUNDING FOR THE STONE BARN:
Next summer the town plans to apply for a grant with the Jeffris
Family Foundation which gives funds specifically for
preservation projects right here in WI. This is a 2:1
grant which means that for every $2 we raise, they will donate
$1. Due to the high restoration costs of the barn, our
committee feels it is in our best financial interest to wait to
see if we get this grant before we begin the major restorations.
The grant is not awarded until the
fall of the year. Once we know either way if we are
awarded the grant, we will begin the restorations. In the
meantime, we will be looking for other grants and funding.
It is the towns plan to raise all the funds we need for the
restorations of the Stone Barn.
WE NEED HELP! We are looking for
people to volunteer their services, either for free or at a
reduced rate, to help with the construction of the above
mentioned projects this summer. If you can help in any way
by donating your time, material, machines, or funds, please
contact Kris at (920) 822-5447, or click
HERE to email her.
Your help is GREATLY appreciated!
